Children communicate through far more than words. They express themselves through movement, rhythm, sensory orientation, relational seeking, material exploration, and the subtle ways they navigate their environment. These expressions are not incidental. They are meaningful signals of how a child is experiencing their day.Embarkia’s philosophy is ecological. Communication is not a single skill that sits inside the child. It is a dynamic interaction between the child, the people around them, the materials they use, and the spaces they inhabit. Every setting has its own communication ecology, shaped by relationships, sensory and material environments, routines, expectations, and opportunities for participation.Embarkia supports practitioners to notice the conditions that shape communication. Listening Ecology Framework

The Listening Ecology Framework is the centre of Embarkia’s work. It offers a way of understanding how children experience their day through the relationships, sensory landscapes, materials and interactions that surround them. Rather than focusing on isolated behaviours or skills, the framework supports practitioners to notice the wider conditions that shape communication and participation.Listening ecology is about paying attention to what life feels like for a child in a particular space. It considers how children move, how they seek connection, how they use materials, how they respond to rhythm and routine, and how they navigate the expectations placed upon them. These observations help practitioners understand the child’s experience with greater clarity and compassion.The framework is used in partnership with schools and early years settings to explore communication, belonging and participation. CommuniSteps is a digital tool designed to help practitioners build next steps that honour children’s communication, sensory needs and lived experiences. It supports teams to move beyond behaviour‑led interpretations and towards responses that feel clear, compassionate and grounded in ecological understanding.The tool is being developed through collaboration with schools and early years settings. CommuniSteps helps practitioners reflect on children’s communication ecology and create next steps that recognise agency, participation and belonging.CommuniSteps will be available to settings through Embarkia partnerships and professional learning. Pilot Labs
Collaborative inquiry into communication ecology
Pilot Labs are small, focused collaborations with settings that want to explore communication ecology in practice. Each Lab creates space for practitioners to notice children’s lived experiences, reflect on their environments and consider how communication is shaped by relationships, sensory landscapes and daily rhythms.Pilot Labs are not training sessions. They are inquiry spaces where teams can observe, reflect and explore ecological perspectives together. Each Lab is shaped around the needs of the setting and the children within it. The work is gentle, relational and grounded in noticing.Pilot Labs also support the development of Embarkia’s tools and approaches, including CommuniSteps. PhD researcher in early childhood education
Melanie Yates‑Boothby is an Early Years specialist with more than eighteen years of experience working with young children, families and multidisciplinary teams. Her work is shaped by a deep commitment to understanding children’s lived experiences and the ecological conditions that support communication, connection and belonging.Melanie has worked as an Early Years teacher, EYFS leader and SENCO, and is currently completing a PhD in early childhood education. Her research explores communication ecology and the ways children express themselves through relationships, sensory experiences, movement and engagement with their environment. This ecological perspective sits at the heart of Embarkia.Across her career, Melanie has been known for her gentle noticing, her reflective practice and her ability to see children clearly. She works relationally with practitioners, helping teams understand what communication feels like for children and how environments can support participation with clarity and compassion.Melanie collaborates with schools, early years settings, multi‑academy trusts and universities, offering professional learning, ecological inquiry and communication‑centred consultancy. She is also the creator of CommuniSteps, an ND‑affirming practitioner tool shaped by ecological communication, and leads Pilot Labs that explore communication ecology in practice.Her work is grounded in children’s rights, neurodiversity‑affirming practice and a belief that every child communicates meaningfully within their own ecology. Small classroom moments.
“Build a beetle.”
A small game played over a year ago is still repeated every time he sees me. Other adults saw a child who acted out. I saw a child who had learned that adults noticed him most when things went wrong. Connection came first. Eventually, so did trust.
‘The compliant child’.
Some children quietly follow others through the day without fully understanding the language around them. It is often in small shared conversations that hidden uncertainty becomes visible, alongside remarkable competence that had gone unnoticed.
The child who stopped biting.
There was a time when he bit frequently and struggled to participate safely. Months later, he now comes to adults for comfort and help solving problems. Sometimes the most significant behavioural changes begin relationally, long before they appear behavioural.
